About the Carvings...All my sculptures are carved by hand with various tools and are "one of a kind" originals. No casts or replicas of these sculptures have been made. There is a metal plate on the back of the base or the bottom of each sculpture with my hand engraved signature and year. A signed and dated Certificate of Authenticity comes with each sculpture. The medium I use for my sculptures is wood. Most of my carvings are made from whole logs. Every log I use has been well seasoned and is dry. Wood is a beautiful one of a kind material from nature, and just as each of my sculptures is an original and no two are exactly alike, no two pieces of wood are the same either. There may be various colorations in the wood grain and shapes in the log, as well as naturally occurring divets, knots, and checks. This all adds character and natural beauty to the wood. Every sculpture has been finished with several hand brushed on coats of a high quality finish. This finish brings out the beauty of the wood and helps protect it from the elements. There is more information on this under "Log Info & Carving Care". IS MY WORK WOOD SCULPTURE, CHAINSAW CARVING, WOOD CARVING, FINE ART WOOD SCULPTURE, OR SOMETHING ELSE? Well, it depends entirely on who you talk to. To simplify things, we need to first look at what the actual definitions of a couple of these words mean. Wood is simply one of the many mediums used in making sculptures. Sculpture refers to the finished 3-D work of art, and carving refers to the process of cutting wood. Fine art refers to any of the arts such as music, painting and sculpture. A chainsaw is simply one of many tools that can be used for carving wood or other materials. The common term that does not have an official definition as far as I know, is the term "chainsaw carving". Although I actually use a chainsaw for most of my work, the only reason I use one is because it is a great carving tool. If I found a better tool, I would use that. I do not limit myself to any one tool, and I use anything that will remove wood. Some people envision more rustic work as chainsaw carved, and more defined and refined work as fine art wood sculpture, although in all reality chainsaw work can be very refined, and all chainsaw carvings are fine art wood sculptures by definition. I believe that my work displays both envisioned styles of rustic to refined, and that is why I use the terminology "chainsaw carving", and also "fine art wood sculpture" to describe my work. To me personally, it is all wood sculpture." |
